Le but qu'on cherche à atteindre est la démoralisation de l'"Autre", diminué aux yeux des siens qui réagira trop tard pour reprendre le dessus, ou encore, comme le dit de très descriptive façon la formule célèbre, s'inclinera ("s'incliner devant le fait accompli"). Un exemple en politique extérieure : la réoccupation de la Zone Rhnane par les troupes allemandes en 1935. Sur le plan de la politique intérieure, les coups d'État fournissent un bon exemple d'utilisation de cette technique psychologique.
